As fall and early winter approaches, black bears in Colorado enter hyperphagia, which is a period of increased feeding activity, as they prepare for the long winter. The Town of Buena reminds residents during this time to stay vigilant regarding our wild neighbors.
The best (and easiest!) way to decrease the chance of a bear encounter is to remove all attractants from outside homes and campsites, in addition to other measures:
- Keep all trash and recycle bins inside until the day of trash pickup. DO NOT leave your trash bins outside overnight. Coordinate with a friend and family member if possible to put your trash out, or at minimum, strap your bins shut or get a bear-lock lid trash bin.
- Move bird seed, pet foot and barbecue grills inside.
- Remove compost or move it into a secure shed or barn.
- Close and lock windows in your home, garage and vehicles.
